Monguí & Laguna Negra Experience
From the Colonial Charm of Monguí to the Magic of the Páramo
Service Description
Imagine waking up in a town seemingly frozen in time—cobblestone streets, wooden balconies, and mountains that guard centuries of history. This is Monguí, one of Colombia’s most beautiful Heritage Towns, where every corner tells a story: the imposing Minor Basilica of Our Lady of Monguí, the Chapel of San Antonio, the historic Lime and Stone Bridge, and the lingering memory of the Muisca people that still pulses beneath its stones. Our journey begins with a walk through this magical historic center, where colonial architecture blends with ancestral tales and living traditions. The experience becomes even more authentic with a hands-on local workshop: you can choose between the art of hand-stitching a soccer ball—a craft that earned Monguí its name as “the town of balls”—or a traditional weaving workshop, where skilled campesino hands teach us to bring the ruana boyacense to life, a symbol of cultural pride. Among threads, stitches, and stories, you'll feel the essence of the artisanal legacy passed down through generations. At midday, we’ll enjoy a traditional Boyacense lunch, and in the evening, the warmth of local hospitality welcomes us in cozy Monguí accommodations, where you'll rest among mountains and stars—preparing for a day of adventure that will stay with you forever. On day two, we venture into the Siscunsí-Ocetá Regional Natural Park, considered one of the most beautiful and best-preserved páramos in Colombia. Surrounded by frailejones, high-altitude grasslands, and a silence that stirs the soul, we hike toward the enigmatic Laguna Negra. This mirror-like lagoon, encircled by mountains and legends, was once regarded by ancestral communities as a sacred place—the origin of the universe. There, amidst the mist and sky’s reflection, you’ll understand why this landscape is a natural temple. This two-day, one-night plan includes: Accommodation in Monguí Guided tour of the historic center One cultural workshop of your choice (hand-stitched ball or traditional weaving) Traditional Boyacense lunch Hike to Laguna Negra – Alto de Balcones Professional local guides, environmental interpreters, and travel insurance These are two days that unite history, culture, and nature in a single journey: the colonial charm of Monguí and the majesty of Laguna Negra. A trip for those who seek more than just tourism—an experience that transforms, connecting you to the memory of a people and the greatness of the land.
